How to practise with flashcards
A short, step-by-step routine: look, try, check, and revisit. Follow the illustrated example.
- 1
Look at the prompt
Choose a few cards. Start with a picture or a word in a language you know.
- 2
Try the word
Say or write the answer before turning the card. It’s okay if you need a moment.
- 3
Check your answer
Turn the card. Read the word and its pronunciation. Say it again if you need to.
- 4
Come back to it
Keep tricky words together. Try them again later, and include some familiar words too.

Use pronunciation as a helping hand
Japanese printables use romaji by default, so you can read the pronunciation in Latin letters. Switch to hiragana or katakana as you practise reading kana. Try recalling the word before checking the pronunciation on the card.
Give the word a place in your day
When you recognise a word on a card, try using it away from the page. Name the food when you see it, or say a short sentence you already know. If you get stuck, check the answer and try again later.
